Soldier home from Marawi shot dead by riding-in-tandem

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A soldier who had just come home from Marawi City – where a 5-month war with terrorists had just ended – was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men past midnight Tuesday, October 24. 

According to initial investigation, Corporal Rhufel Alvarez Lihay-Lihay, 39, was playing billiards at the Fontanilla residence in Purok Sweet Honey, Barangay Santa Maria, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. At around 12:20 am Tuesday, two unidentified men appeared and shot him at close range. 

Lihay-Lihay was assigned at the armed forces’ Civic Miltary Operation Battalion, 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division, in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur. He was also a resident of Purok Sweet Honey. 

The victim died on the spot from gunshot wounds in the head and body.

Crime scene investigators found 11c pieces of caliber 45 cartridges,13 9 mm cartridge cases, 5 deformed slugs, and 1 more slug. 

Pagadian city police have yet to establish the motive for the killing, but are hunting down the suspects. – Richard Falcatan/
