2 soldiers killed, 15 hurt in fresh Sulu clashes

MANILA, Philippines – Two soldiers were killed and 15 others were wounded in a firefight with the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu on Thursday, April 9 – a major clash coinciding with the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).

The Army said 6 bandits were killed and 10 others were wounded in the clashes.

At 10:30 am on Thursday, Lieutenant Colonel Greg Nieveras and his men in the Army 32nd Infantry Battalion (IB) encountered about 200 Abu Sayyaf rebels in Sitio Kan-amat in Barangay Gata, Talipao town, according to an initial situation report.

The Army believed it encountered the group of Radullan Sahiron, the most senior leader of the Abu Sayyaf. He is in the Most Wanted Terrorists list  of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for kidnapping an American.

The firefight  lasted for two hours.

The casualties and injured men were airlifted to the KHTB Trauma Hospital in Jolo. – Rappler.com
