MANILA, Philippines – The defense filed a motion on Wednesday, February 1, opposing the prosecution’s request for a subpoena of officers of PS Bank.

The prosecution panel has requested to call in the President, Manager or authorized officers of PS Bank in Paseo de Roxas Ave., Makati to testify and present to the court, documents and bank accounts of Chief Justice Renato Corona and wife Cristina.

The motion cites that the subpoena of these individuals and documents is an action born of “suspicion, rumor or reports and other such similar haunches of guesswork.” The defense has complained about the prosecution’s way of going about the trial, calling it a “fishing expedition.”

They also say that testimony of the officials as well as the presentation of the documents pertain to impeachment complaint 2.4, relating to Corona’s alleged ill-gotten wealth, which has already been disallowed by the court. The motion says such evidence is accordingly inadmissible and irrelevant.

Among the documents being subpoenaed by the prosecution are “the original and certified true copies of Specimen Signature Cards of the bank account which won Php 1 Milllion in the PSBank Monthly Millions Raffle PRomo; Monthly Bank Statements from the time of opening up to January 2012; and other bank accounts.” – Rappler.com
