DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The peace panels of both the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are set to resume the peace negotiations Monday, January 21, in Kuala Lumpur.

Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, GPH peace panel chief, said in a press statement that this round of negotiations is crucial for it intends to settle sensitive issues on Wealth-sharing, Power-sharing, Normalization and Transitional Arrangements and Modalities.

“Much work is still needed to find a middle ground on certain core issues,” Ferrer said.

The last round of talks on December 15 last year ended in a “technical impasse”” concerning the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA).

Jun Muntawil, MILF peace panel secretariat head, declared that they would try to settle at least two of the annexes.

He explained that the transitional arrangement is already 99% done but is still stuck on the discussion on who should lead the BTA.

Ferrer assured that both parties are open and would consider all options to settle remaining difficulties.

The peace panel chair added that the government is optimistic that discussions on the annexes will be finally completed.

“With conviction, goodwill, and earnest partnership with the MILF, we can make this happen very soon,” Ferrer said. – Rappler.com
