JBC opens application process for post of SC associate justice

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has started the search for a new Supreme Court associate justice on Wednesday, September 5. Applications and nominations may be submitted to the JBC until September 17. 

The vacancy for the 15th seat in the High Court came about following the appointment of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on August 24. Sereno is a former associate justice.

Aside from their respective personal data sheets, applicants must submit the following documents to the JBC on or before October 2:

  • Clearances from the National Bureau of Investigation, Office of the Ombudsman, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, police from place of residence, Office of the Bar Confidant and employer
  • Transcript of school records
  • Certificate of Admission to the Bar, with bar rating
  • Income tax return for the past two years
  • Proofs of age and Filipino citizenship
  • Certificate of good standing or latest official receipt from the IBP
  • Certificate of compliance with, or exemption from the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education
  • Sworn statements of assets, liabilities and net worth for the past two years
  • Results of medical examination and sworn medical certificate with impressions on such results, both conducted/issued within two months prior to the filing of application
Article VIII, Sec. 7.1 of the 1987 Constitution states that an SC magistrate must be a natural-born citizen of the Philippines, is at least 40 years old and should have practiced law or has been a judge for at least 15 years.
