MANILA, Philippines – Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said he did not influence the vote of his fellow SC justices in the Vizconde murder case, contrary to claims by Lauro Vizconde who is opposing his nomination for the post of chief justice.

Carpio wrote the Judicial and Bar Council – the body that screens and vets aspirants for the judicary – and defended himself against accusations made by Vizconde in an opposition filed on July 17. Vizconde, whose wife and daughters were killed in 1991,  said Carpio had lobbied for the acquittal of Hubert Webb and 6 others who were suspects in the case.

Vizconde cited dismissed Chief Justice Renato Corona as the source of this information.

Talagang binabraso at iniimpluwensyahan ni Carpio ang kanyang mga kasama para mapawalang-sala si Webb,” (Carpio is trying to influence the vote of others so that Webb will be acquitted),” Corona allegedly told him in a meeting in September 2010.

According to Vizconde, Corona said this in the presence of Dante Jimenez, a co-founding chairman of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption.

Carpio said the Supreme Court already ruled on this matter in Februrary 2011. The SC, in a resolution promulgated that month, said “Justice Carpio neither asked nor influenced any of his colleagues to vote for the acquittal of Hubert Webb or any of the accused.”

Carpio will appear before the JBC on July 26. He is one of the 22 contenders to the post of chief justice, which was vacated by Corona on May 29. The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, removed Corona from the post for failing to declare P183 million in his statement of assets, liabilities and networth. – Rappler.com
