Flash floods hit 3 Pangasinan towns as San Roque Dam releases water
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan - At least 15 barangays (villages) in Mangatarem town are now under water while 67 others were affected by flash floods as a result partly from the moderate release of water from San Roque Dam in San Manuel town.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Mangatarem said up to 10,000 persons in these barangays were affected.
Mangatarem is in the southern section of Pangasinan where the Agno River water is joined by water coming from the Camiling River further south, where water of the swollen Tarlac River flows
Flash floods were also reported since Tuesday night in adjacent Aguilar town, forcing the evacuation of 31 families, particularly from Barangay Bocboc West where the water was about six feet deep, to the Aguilar Central School.
Some villages of Bugallon, the next town, were also affected by flash floods.
Hilario Esperanza of the Agno Flood Forecasting and Warning System (AFFWS) cast doubts that the water from the San Roque Dam caused the inundation of some villages in Mangatarem.
He said their water gauges along the Agno River showed that the opening of two gates of San Roque by two meters caused only minimal rise of water of the Agno River at only .04 meter.
A report said evacuation of affected residents are now going on in Mangatarem.
Meanwhile, an unidentified old woman, about 80 years old, believed to have been drowned, was found floating along the river in San Jacinto town early Wednesday, according to the police.
