MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Hanna (international name Soudelor) maintained its strength as it continues to move toward the northern edge of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Batanes province and the Babuyan and Calayan group of islands were placed under Storm Signal No 1 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Hanna was spotted 715 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes at 4 pm on Thursday, August 6, according to PAGASA’s bulletin.

The typhoon clocked in maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers/hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 200 km/h.

Batanes and the Babuyan and Calayan islands should brace for 30 to 60-kilometer/hour winds expected in those areas within the next 36 hours.

Such winds can damage houses made of light materials and rice crops in the flowering stage.

Waves at open sea may reach heights of 1.25 to 4 meters (4 to 13 feet).

Fishers are warned against venturing out to the Northern and Eastern seaboards of Luzon, and the seaboards of Palawan, Masbate, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The typhoon will continue moving west northwest at a speed of 20 km/h. It should be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility on the afternoon of Saturday, August 8.

The next typhoon update will be released at 11 pm. – Rappler.com
