Typhoon Ineng continues to weaken, speeds away from PH
Batanes and the Calayan and Babuyan island groups remain under storm warning signals

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Ineng (Goni) continues to weaken as it accelerates away from northeastern Philippines Sunday, August 23, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 4 am Sunday, Ineng was located 265 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 170 km/h, the bureau said in its 5 am bulletin.

Batanes is currently under public storm warning signal number 2, while the Calayan and Babuyan group of islands are under signal number 1.

Storm signals elsewhere have been lifted.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the typhoon’s 500 km diameter, and it is expected to continue enhancing the southwest monsoon (habagat), bringing rain over the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila.

By Monday morning, the storm is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), northeast of Basco or to the east of Taiwan.

The next bulletin on Ineng will be issued by the bureau at 11 am. – Rappler.com
