MANILA, Philippines – Southern and western Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with widespread rain on Friday, August 31, the state weather bureau said, as it warned of possible flash floods and landslides.

This is related to the possible storm that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted at 2 am Friday, said weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio in a phone interview with Rappler. PAGASA located a shallow low pressure area (SLPA) at 280 kilometers southeast of Davao City, based on PAGASA’s 5 am weather bulletin.

But the SLPA is “shallow” because there is a low possibility it will become a storm, Aurelio explained. PAGASA said it has not spotted any storm within the Philippines as of its latest bulletin.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is affecting northern Luzon, PAGASA said.

Northern and Central Luzon and the rest of Mindanao, thus, will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, said PAGASA. In the rest of the Philippines, it will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
