MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Tropical Storm Nona (international name Melor) has slowed down while maintaining its strength, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.

As of 10 am Saturday, December 12, the center of the tropical storm was located 1,025 km east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

Nona has maintained strength, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.

It is still moving west northwest in direction, but has slowed down at 17 km/h. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the 100-km diameter of Nona.

Independent local weather organization Weather Philippines said Nona could become a typhoon on Sunday, December 13.

Based on the organization’s independent forecast, the tropical storm “may pose a serious threat to Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas early next week.”

Nona is expected to enhance the northeast monsoon, bringing occasional rainshowers with some thunderstorms across the northern and eastern sections of Luzon beginning next week.

Residents along Eastern Luzon and Southern Luzon, including Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas, should closely monitor the tropical storm, Weather Philippines said in its 7 am update.

Below are forecast positions for the next 5 days, according to PAGASA:

  • Sunday morning – 605 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar
  • Monday morningDecember 14 – 350 km east of Sorsogon City, Sorsogon
  • Tuesday morning, December 15 – vicinity of Virac, Catanduanes
  • Wednesday morningDecember 16 – 55 km northeast of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro
  • Thursday morningDecember 17 – 195 km west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro

The next bulletin on Nona will be issued at 11 pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, President Benigno Aquino III has instructed the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to coordinate with local and provincial DRRMCs. This is to make sure that everyone is monitoring and closely watching developments as reported by PAGASA, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

Addressing residents of Leyte and Bicol, areas expected to be hit by the storm, she said there is no need to panic, just to be alert. – Rappler.com
