Nona slows as it crosses northern Mindoro

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Nona (international name Melor) slowed down as it made its way across northern Mindoro, said state weather bureau PAGASA on Tuesday afternoon, December 15.

Nona has maximum winds of 140 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h. It is moving west at 11 km/h.

Signal #3 (121-170 km/h expected in 18 hours) is raised over the following areas:

• Oriental Mindoro
• Occidental Mindoro, including Lubang Island

Signal #2 (61-120 km/h expected in 24 hours) is up over:

• Batangas
• Cavite
• Marinduque
• Romblon  
• Calamian group of Islands

Signal #1 (30-60 km/h expected in 36 hours) is raised over:

• Metro Manila
• Bataan
• southern Zambales
• Bulacan
• Cavite
• Laguna
• Rizal
• Quezon
• northern Palawan including Cuyo Island
• Antique

Estimated rainfall amount is moderate to heavy within the 250-kilometer diameter of the typhoon. 

Flash floods and landslides are also expected over the areas under signal #s 2 and 3, while storm surges of up to 2 meters are possible.

Meanwhile, PAGASA also said a low pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) was located 1,645 kilometers east southeast of Mindanao as of 2 pm. – Rappler.com
