MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Nona (international name Melor) has maintained its strength as it moves toward the West Philippine Sea, state weather bureau PAGASA said in its 11 pm bulletin Tuesday, December 15.

As of 10 pm Tuesday, Nona was located at 75 km west northwest of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. It has maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h. 

The typhoon is still moving west in direction at 11 km/h, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected within its 250-km diameter.

Public Storm Warning Signal No. 3 (121-170 km/h expected in 18 hours) is raised over Northern Mindoro provinces, including Lubang Island. 

Signal No. 2 (61-120 km/h expected in 24 hours) is also raised over Bataan, Batangas, Cavite, and the rest of Mindoro provinces 

Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 (30-60 km/h expected in 36 hours) is raised over:

  • Metro Manila
  • Pampanga
  • Southern Zambales
  • Bulacan
  • Laguna
  • Rizal
  • Quezon
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon
  • Calamian group of islands

PAGASA said flashfloods and landslides are expected over the provinces of Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, and Metro Manila. 

As of 8 pm Tuesday, the low pressure area earlier spotted by PAGASA outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility has intensified into a tropical depression and is now at 1,580 km east southeast of Mindanao.
