MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Depression Ambo, the first storm in the country in 2016, maintained its strength on Sunday afternoon, June 26.
State weather bureau PAGASA made the announcement in its 5 pm bulletin. The tropical depression is still expected to weaken after making landfall over Aurora province on Monday, June 27.
As of 5 pm on Sunday, Ambo’s center was located 140 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour. It is expected to move west northwest at 22 kilometers per hour.
Public storm warning signal number 1 is still raised in the following areas:
- Catanduanes
- Camarines Norte
- Camarines Sur
- Northern Quezon including Polillo Islands
- Aurora
- Quirino
These areas should prepare for possible flash floods and landslides. PAGASA also said the 6 areas may expect the following:
- Twigs and branches of trees may be broken
- Some banana plants may tilt or land flat on the ground
- Rice in flowering stage may suffer significant damage
- Some nipa and cogon houses may be partially unroofed
- Sea travel of small seacraft and fishing boats is risky
Ambo will likely bring with it an estimated 2.5 to 10 millimeters of rainfall per hour in areas within the 200 kilometers of the tropical depression.
Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and the Bicol regions should expect occasional moderate to heavy rains starting Sunday.
PAGASA also wants the public and the disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned in affected areas to “take appropriate actions.”
