PAGASA warning: Rainy weekend in parts of Luzon

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – While Typhoon Butchoy is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday, July 8, it’s still going to be a rainy weekend because Butchoy will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon.

In a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, July 6, state weather bureau PAGASA said there would first be light to moderate rains in Luzon and Western Visayas until Thursday, July 7.

But heading into the weekend, the rains in Luzon – including Metro Manila – will become “moderate to occasionally heavy.”

Saturday, in particular, would be “the most extreme,” according to the state weather bureau.

PAGASA warned that floods and landslides are possible in Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales, Pangasinan, and Benguet.

A gale warning is also in place for the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, meaning fishermen are advised not to sail in these areas.

Meanwhile, signal number 1 is still raised over Batanes province.

As of 4 pm on Wednesday, Butchoy was 615 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, still moving northwest toward Taiwan at 30 kilometers per hour (km/h).

It strengthened further and now has maximum winds of 210 km/h and gustiness of up to 245 km/h.
