MANILA, Philippines – Parts of Luzon were placed under tropical cyclone warning signal number 1 as Typhoon Ferdie (Meranti) intensified further on Monday morning, September 12.

In its bulletin issued 11 am on Monday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Ferdie now has maximum winds of up to 175 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 210 km/h.

The typhoon is located 870 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, moving west northwest toward the general direction of extreme Northern Luzon at 22 km/h.

Signal number 1 is raised over the following areas:

  • Cagayan
  • Apayao
  • Batanes
  • Babuyan Group of Islands

Moderate to heavy rain is expected within the 500-km diameter of the typhoon.
