MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Lawin (Haima) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at 5:30 pm on Monday, October 17.

State weather bureau PAGASA said Lawin is 1,155 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west northwest at 24 kilometers per hour (km/h).

Lawin is stronger than Typhoon Karen (Sarika), which left PAR early Monday.

Right now, Lawin has maximum winds of up to 175 km/h and gustiness of up to 215 km/h. It is expected to intensify even further before making landfall in the Cagayan area by Thursday morning, October 20.

“We are anticipating that Typhoon Lawin will be much stronger than Karen because it started way outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, meaning that it will have sufficient time and distance to intensify so we will exert all our best effort to anticipate the damage and make the necessary preparation and measures,” said National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Ricardo Jalad in a press briefing on Monday.

Jalad also said President Rodrigo Duterte instructed the NDRRMC to fast-track the delivery of services to areas affected by Karen, and areas which would be hit by Lawin.

“That includes the rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure,” said the NDRRMC chief.

According to PAGASA, Lawin will cross Ilocos Norte and Apayao after making landfall on Thursday.

The state weather bureau also warned that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the typhoon’s 600-km diameter. So far, there are no areas under tropical cyclone warning signals yet as Lawin is still too far from land.

The typhoon could leave PAR on Friday, October 21.
