MANILA, Philippines – More areas were placed under signal number 1 as Typhoon Lawin (Haima) slightly accelerated late Tuesday morning, October 18.

In its bulletin issued 11 am on Tuesday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Lawin is already 950 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte, moving west northwest at 25 kilometers per hour (km/h) from the previous 24 km/h.

The powerful typhoon maintained its strength, with maximum winds of up to 185 km/h and gustiness of up to 230 km/h.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected within Lawin’s 650-km diameter.

Signal number 1 is now raised in the following areas:

  • Kalinga
  • Mt Province

Lawin is expected to intensify even further before making landfall in the Cagayan area early Thursday morning, October 20.

PAGASA said sea travel is risky in the northern and western seaboards of Northern Luzon, the western seaboard of Central Luzon, and the eastern seaboard of Samar.

Lawin is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) early Friday, October 21.
