MANILA, Philippines – The tropical cyclone with the international name Talim first intensified into a severe tropical storm before dawn on Monday, September 11, and then further strengthened into a typhoon late Monday morning.

In a bulletin issued past 11 am on Monday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Talim remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), at 1,300 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.

The typhoon is moving west northwest at 25 kilometers per hour (km/h) and is expected to enter PAR on Monday afternoon. When it enters PAR, it will be given the local name Lannie.

It will then make its way to the area of extreme Northern Luzon and Taiwan.

So far, Talim has maximum winds of 120 km/h and gustiness of up to 145 km/h. It could still intensify again, according to PAGASA.

Since the typhoon has no direct effect on any part of the Philippines just yet, what’s causing the rainshowers on Monday is the low pressure area (LPA) now located 400 kilometers east of Quezon.

The LPA is bringing moderate to heavy rain to the Visayas, Southern Luzon, Central Luzon, and Metro Manila. In particular, PAGASA warned residents of Bicol, Zambales, and Aurora to be on alert for possible flash floods and landslides.

The rain due to the LPA is expected to continue until Tuesday, September 12. – Rappler.com
