MANILA, Philippines – Severe Tropical Storm Domeng (Maliksi) maintained its strength on Saturday evening, June 9, as it began moving towards the northeastern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), where it will exit.

In a bulletin issued 11 pm on Saturday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Domeng is now located 675 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes, moving northeast at a relatively fast 27 kilometers per hour (km/h).

The severe tropical storm continues to have maximum winds of 90 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 115 km/h.

Due to Domeng’s direction, it did not make landfall in any part of the Philippines. No areas were placed under tropical cyclone warning signals, too.

But the severe tropical storm has been enhancing the southwest monsoon or hanging habagat, which continues to affect Luzon and the Visayas.

Domeng and the southwest monsoon combined will bring moderate to heavy rain to Metro Manila, Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Western Visayas. Residents of these areas should remain on alert for flash floods and landslides.

PAGASA issued a red rainfall advisory for Metro Manila at 11 pm on Saturday, meaning torrential rain was expected to continue for two more hours, and flood-prone areas could experience serious floods.

Below is the complete color-coded rainfall advisory issued 11 pm.

Light to moderate rain will also hit the rest of Luzon and the rest of the Visayas due to the southwest monsoon. Floods are possible in low-lying areas. (READ: FAST FACTS: Tropical cyclones, rainfall advisories)

PAGASA also warned that sea travel is risky in the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon, the seaboards of Central Luzon, and the western and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon.

Based on its latest forecast track, Domeng is expected to leave PAR on Sunday morning, June 10.

PAGASA earlier declared the start of the rainy season on Friday, June 8, saying that the rainfall criteria have been met due to “widespread rainfall recorded in most PAGASA stations during the past few days.”
