Huaning makes landfall over Taiwan; Batanes under Signal #1

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Huaning (Soulik – international name) has made landfall over Northern Taiwan but it continues to affect weather in the Batanes Group of Islands.  

In its 5am bulletin on Saturday, July 13, weather bureau Pagasa lowered the public storm signal warning in Batanes to signal number 1 as Huaning moves further away Northwest at 20kph. 

Although Huaning is now within Taiwan, Pagasa weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said certain parts of Taiwan are included in Philippine Area of Responsibility as far as monitoring weather disturbances are concerned since Taiwan is near Batanes. 

“Batanes is near Taiwan, therefore it continues to be affected by the typhoon,” Aurelio said. 

As of 4am, Huaning was posted at 420km North of Itbayat, Batanes (25.0°N, 122.2°E) with maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 200kph. 

It is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility this afternoon. 

Those living within the 900km diameter of the Typhoon can expect rainfall of between 4-17 mm per hour. 

Meanwhile, cloudy skies and light to moderate rainshowers are in forecast for Manila and the rest of the country. – Angela Casauay/Rappler.com
