Maring now a tropical storm; expect continued rains

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm “Maring” (international codename: Trami) has gained strength and is predicted to move southeast. 

On Sunday, August 18, state weather bureau PAGASA said in its 11 pm bulletin that Maring was estimated at 530 km east southeast of Itbayat, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and is forecast to move southeast at 7 km/h.

Maring brought rain to Metro Manila and most parts of central and northern Luzon on Sunday.

Residents in these affected areas are advised to be alert for possible landslides and flashfloods.

In Metro Manila, Pagasa raised a red rainfall warning, saying “severe flooding is expected” due to “intense rains” brought about by Typhoon Maring.

Monday classes in some areas in Metro Manila as well as nearby provinces are already suspended due to the heavy rain.

The rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Visayas will remain partly cloudy with some rain and wind. Mindanao cities will have some sunshine but can expect mostly cloudy weather.  – Rappler.com
