(2nd UPDATE) At least 34,000 residents are affected as of 6am

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE)– The entire province of Bataan was placed under a state of calamity Tuesday, August 20, as heavy rain from the southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm Maring (international codename Trami) continued to batter parts of Luzon.

At least  56,272 families or 256,790 individuals in 143 villages in the towns of Dinalupihan, Hermosa, Orani, Salam, Abucay and Balanga City were affected as of 9am Tuesday, according to a report from the Office of Civil Defense-Region 3 posted on the Facebook account of the Philippine Information Agency in Bataan.

Of those affected, at least 969 families or 4,079 individuals have sought temporary in shelter in the province’s 47 evacuation centers as of 9am.

In Balanga City, 106 of 4,934 families are already in evacuation centers.

The town of Dinalupihan, which earlier declared a state of calamity, bore most of the storm’s brunt.

According to Dinalupihan’s Municipal Social Development Office, at least 30 of its 46 barangays were submerged, affecting about 29,775 families.

Gov Albert Garcia said rescue opeations are still ongoing in barangays where floodwater has risen to as high as exceeding the height of humans.

“The heavy downpour was record-breaking, ” Garcia said in a PNA report.

As of Tuesday morning, the death toll from Maring has risen to 7. One of the reported casualties was from Bataan. He was identified as 3-year-old Jeric Sorgello. He drowned after falling into a river in Brgy Alas-asin, Mariveles.

Placing a province or a city under a state of calamity allows the local government to gain access to calamity funds, impose automatic price control on basic goods, grant interest-free loans, as well as provide additional allowances for public employees and disaster agencies operating in the area. Angela Casauay/Rappler.com
