MANILA, Philippines – The low pressure area east of Luzon has developed in to a tropical depression Monday, September 16, and named Odette, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

Odette’s center was spotted 930 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora (17.2°N, 132.1°E) as of 4 pm Monday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h, the bureau said in its 5 pm tropical cyclone alert.

The tropical depression is forecast to move west northwest at a slow speed of 7 km/h, and is expected to be 830 km east of Tuguegarao City by Tuesday afternoon (September 17).

The system is estimated to bring moderate to heavy rain (5-10 mm/h) within its 300 km diameter, the bureau said.

No storm warning signals have been raised yet by the bureau, as the system is still far from any Philippine landmass.

However, it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing rain over parts of Luzon.

The next bulletin for Odette will be released at 11 pm Monday. – Rappler.com
