Santi intensifies; 6 provinces signal no. 1

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm Santi (international codename Nari) continued to intensify Thursday morning, October 10 as it slowly moved closer to east Luzon.

Santi was located 350 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes (15.2°N, 127.6°E) as of 10 am Thursday, packing maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 120 km/h.

State weather bureau PAGASA said storm signals are now hoisted over the following provinces:

• Catanduanes
• Camarines Sur
• Isabela
• Aurora
• Quezon
• Camarines Norte

These areas should expect winds of 30-60 km/h within the next 36 hours, the bureau said, and residents must be on the lookout for possible flash floods and landslides.

Santi is expected to bring moderate to intense rainfall (5.0-20.00 mm/h) within its 400 km diameter.

The storm is expected to move west northwest, or towards the general area of east Luzon, at a speed of 11 km/h. It is expected to be 340 km east of Baler, Aurora Friday morning, October 11, and 80 km east of the town Saturday, October 12.

It is expected to make landfall over the weekend, and forecast models point to the storm crossing central Luzon.
