Agaton moves nearer Surigao provinces
MANILA, Philippines – Storm signals in 8 provinces remain unchanged as Tropical Depression Agaton moved slowly towards the Surigao provinces on Saturday, January 18.
Storm signal number 1 (winds of 30-60 km/h in a least 36 hours) was raised over the following provinces:
- Southern Leyte
- Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island
- Surigao del Sur
- Dinagat Province
- Agusan del Norte
- Agusan del Sur
- Davao Oriental
- Compostella Valley
As of 4 am on January 18, Agaton was found 170 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or 175 east of Surigao City.
Agaton currently packs maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, according to state weather bureau PAGASA. It is predicted to move west at 5 km/h.
The tropical depression is expected to bring heavy to moderate rain (5-15 millimeters per hour) within 300 kilometers of the weather system. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected over Central Visayas and the rest of Easten Visayas.
Sea travel over the seaboards of Luzon and Visayas is considered risky, said PAGASA.
By Sunday morning, Agaton is expected to be 70 km north of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur and 65 kilometers north of Davao city by Monday morning. By Tuesday, PAGASA expects Agaton to be 90 km south of Cotabato city.
