Yolanda-hit areas warned vs rain from Basyang

MANILA, Philippines – The state weather bureau on Friday afternoon, January 31, warned areas hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) to prepare for heavy rain brought by Tropical Storm Basyang (Kajiki).

The affected areas include Leyte, the province worst hit by Yolanda. 

In a 5 pm advisory on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a yellow rainfall warning for the following areas:

• Southern part of Eastern Samar and Samar

• Leyte

• Southern Leyte

• Biliran Island

PAGASA said flooding is possible in low-lying areas, while landslides may happen in mountainous areas.

On its website, PAGASA said a yellow rainfall advisory means “rainfall of 7.5 to 15 mm per hour has fallen or (is) expected to fall and most likely to continue for the next 3 hours.”

It advised the public to call numbers 340-4143 and 340-1868, or visit www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph, for more information.

This is PAGASA’s first heavy rainfall warning in relation to Basyang.

The state weather bureau issued this warning as it raised storm signals over 32 areas. It said Basyang will likely make landfall by midnight. – Rappler.com
