MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Depression Basyang (Kajiki) weakened and became a low pressure area (LPA) as it is seen out of the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday, February 2, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) lowered all public storm signals in its 11 pm update on Saturday, February 1.

It spotted the LPA 328 km west northwest of Puerto Princesa City, or 559 km west of Coron, Palawan, as of 8 pm on Saturday.

PAGASA, however, advised fishing boats and other small seacraft “not to venture out into the eastern and southern seaboards of Luzon due to the surge of the northeast monsoon.”

This is PAGASA’s final bulletin on Basyang, unless the LPA becomes a storm again.

Basyang, which made an early landfall on Friday, January 31, claimed at least 3 lives, according to a 6 pm report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Saturday.

A motorized banca, M/V Ave Maria 5, capsized at the Poro Port in Cebu’s Camotes Island. Passenger Danny Tundag, 24, of Daanbantayan, Cebu, drowned on Friday.

Jose Haji Aque Babatid, 22, died of electrocution. He was also from Cebu.

Dionisio Paler, 66, of Maasin City, Southern Leyte also drowned. His body was retrieved near the river bank in barangay Mabini Macrohon. – Rappler.com
