MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Tropical Storm Mario (international name Fung-Wong) has slightly intensified as it moves toward Southern Taiwan, state weather bureau PAGASA said. 

As of 10 am Saturday, September 20, the last tracked position of Mario was 143 km north northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. The storm is expected to bring maximum sustained winds of 105 km per hour near the center, with gustiness of up to 135 km per hour. 

It is forecast to move north northeast at 15 km per hourPAGASA said, with moderate to intense rains (7 to 20 mm per hour) within the tropical storm’s 350-km diameter. (READ: #MarioPH: Help map critical reports)

The following public storm warning signals remain in place:

Signal No. 2 (Winds of 61-100 kph is expected in at least 24 hrs):

  • Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands
  • Batanes Group of Islands
  • Apayao
  • Ilocos Norte

Signal No. 1 (Winds of 30 – 60 kph is expected in at least 36 hours):

  • Cagayan
  • Kalinga
  • Abra
  • Ilocos Sur

Residents in these areas are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. 

The combined effects of Mario and the southwest monsoon will bring moderate to strong winds over Zambales, Bataan, and the rest of Northern Luzon. These areas will experience moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, and the rest of Central Luzon will have occasional rains.

Mario is expected to be at 244 km north northwest of Itbayat, Batanes on Sunday morning, September 21 and at 676 km north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes – out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility – by Monday morning, September 22.
