MANILA, Philippines – Rains in Metro Manila and many parts of Luzon on Saturday afternoon, December 13, are caused by a thunderstorm, enhanced by the combined effects of the northeast monsoon (amihan) and a low pressure area east of Visayas, said state weather bureau PAGASA.

There is no need, however, to issue a yellow rainfall warning because the criteria for it were not met, said PAGASA weather forecaster Fernando Cada.

At 3 pm on Saturday, PAGASA issued an advisory on a thunderstorm affecting Metro Manila and some towns in Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Cavite, Batangas, and Bataan, which may persist within two hours.

Thunderstorms are also expected within the next two hours, or until 5 pm, over Zambales, Laguna, Rizal,  Quezon, Bulacan, and other areas of Batangas, Pampanga, Cavite, Nueva Ecija, and Tarlac.

Meanwhile, as of 10 am, a low pressure area (LPA) was spotted 410 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Its outer cloud bands plus the northeast monsoon are enhancing the rains in many parts of Metro Manila, and central and southern Luzon, said Cada.

The LPA is bringing moderate to ocassionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Visayas. Meanwhile, the Bicol and Caraga regions will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions against heavy rains, strong winds, lightning, and possible flashfloods in these areas, PAGASA said– Rappler.com
