MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Chedeng (Maysak), which entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Wednesday evening, April 1, maintained its strength overnight, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.

As of 4 am Thursday, April 2, Chedeng had maximum sustained winds of 180 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 215 km/h. It is moving west northwest at 19 km/h. 

The typhoon was last located 1005 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, or 935 km east northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar as of 8 am Thursday.

The US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center downgraded Chedeng from super typhoon to typhoon status, while the Japan Meteorological Agency still labels Chedeng as a “very strong” typhoon.

Landfall was earlier predicted to occur between late Saturday, April 4, and early Sunday, April 5, in the vicinity of Aurora, Quezon, or Isabela provinces.

Elsewhere, coastal seas will be slight to moderate as light to moderate winds blow from the northeast to east.
