MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Typhoon Chedeng (international Maysak) weakened further as it made its way towards the Philippine landmass in the late afternoon of Friday, April 3.

State weather bureau PAGASA spotted the tropical storm 845 kilometers east southeast of Casiguran, Aurora at 4 pm that day. It packed maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers/hour (km/h) with gustiness of up to 170 km/h.

These winds were weaker than those detected at 11 am – maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h with gustiness of up to 185 km/h.

Chedeng is forecasted to move west northwest at a speed of 19 km/h. PAGASA said the storm will likely make landfall over the coast of the Aurora-Isabela area by Sunday morning, April 5.

PAGASA has raised Storm Warning Signal No. 1 over Catanduanes and Camarines Sur.

In its 11 am weather bulletin on Friday, PAGASA warned areas under Signal No. 1 of the following effects of the wind:

  • Twigs and branches of trees may be broken
  • Some banana plants may tilt or land flat on the ground
  • Rice in flowering stage may suffer significant damage
  • Some nipa and cogon houses may be partially unroofed
  • Sea travel of small sea crafts and fishing boats is risky

These areas “will have occasional rains with occasional gusty winds,” the state weather bureau added.

Chedeng is expected to exit the landmass through Ilocos Sur by Sunday evening, and to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday morning, April 6. – Paterno Esmaquel II, Pia Ranada/Rappler.com
