MANILA, Philippines – Seven provinces in Luzon have been placed under storm signals as Typhoon Chedeng (international name: Maysak) neared the Philippines’ landmass on Friday, April 3.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hoisted Public Storm Warning Signal No 1 over the following provinces:

  • Isabela
  • Aurora
  • Quezon (including Polillo Island)
  • Catanduanes
  • Camarines Sur
  • Camarines Norte
  • Quirino

Storm Signal No 1 indicates that in 36 hours, these provinces may experience winds strong enough to break tree branches, damage rice crops, and possibly even unroof some nipa and cogon houses.

Flashfloods and landslides are also likely in these provinces. Sea travel by small seacrafts and fishing boats will be dangerous.

Chedeng may also generate 2-meter-high (6.6 feet) storm surges in the eastern coast of Aurora, Quezon and Isabela.

In the next 12 hours, PAGASA is also set to raise Public Storm Warning Signal No 1 over Cagayan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Chedeng was spotted 845 kilometers east southeast of Casiguran, Aurora at 4 pm on Friday. It packed maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers/hour (km/h) with gustiness of up to 170 km/h.

These winds were weaker than those detected earlier that day at 11 am – maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h with gustiness of up to 185 km/h.

Chedeng is forecasted to move west northwest at a speed of 19 km/h. PAGASA said the storm will likely make landfall over the coast of the Aurora-Isabela area by Sunday morning, April 5.

It is likely to exit the landmass through Ilocos Sur by Sunday evening, and to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday morning, April 6. – Pia Ranada/Rappler.com
