The University of the Philippines (UP) remained among the 500 best universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021 released Wednesday, September 2. 

“UP is largely seen as one of the best Filipino universities in national rankings and among the top institutions in Asia. Recent improvements include academic reputation and international faculty ratio,” the university’s Times Higher Education profile read.

UP remained in the 401-500 bracket, while the De La Salle University stayed in the 1001+ bracket.

UP and DLSU were the only Philippine universities included in the list.

The THE University Rankings 2021 included more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions. The universities were assessed based on scores on 13 performance indicators that cover teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

“This year’s ranking analyzed more than 80 million citations across over 13 million research publications and included survey responses from 22,000 scholars globally,” the publication said.

The University of Oxford still topped the annual list, followed by Stanford University, which climbed two spots from its previous ranking. Universities from the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) dominated the top 10.

Tsinghua University in China is the top Asian university, and the first Asian university to break into the top 20 under the current methodology. It was ranked 20th alongside Duke University in the US.
