WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is flying out again – this time to Bangkok, Thailand – to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week.

The President is visiting Thailand from November 16 to 19, and is expected to hold meetings with business personalities as well as bilateral talks with his counterparts from various governments.

APEC, a forum with 21 members from the Asia-Pacific, focuses on regional economic integration. For 2022, the group’s thrust is on creating a “paradigm shift” for a “balanced and sustainable post-COVID-19 economy.”

Marcos: Food security, pandemic readiness, climate change

At the CEO Summit “scene setting” panel, Marcos emphasized three points: food security, pandemic readiness, and the climate crisis.

Marcos was one of three panelists to open the CEO Forum in Bangkok. He was joined by PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Chairman Robert Moritz and World Economic Forum chairman Klaus Schwab.

The Philippine president connected the three points to the Filipino experience. Food security, he said, is the lens by which the average Filipino views global issues like climate change and war. APEC and its allies, he said, must prepare not just for COVID-19 and its variants but other possible emerging diseases, arguing that the world must not go through another global lockdown.

Finally, he said climate change was the “most pressing, existential challenge of our times.” The Philippines, said Marcos, was among the countries that stand to lose the most because of the climate crisis.
