Many Filipino Catholics celebrate on Friday, June 18, as the incoming archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Jose Advincula, receives the red hat and the ring bestowed on members of the College of Cardinals.
Commonly called princes of the Catholic Church, cardinals serve as advisers of the Pope and, if below the age of 80, get to elect his successor. The color red symbolizes their willingness to die for the Catholic faith, while the ring is a symbol of unity with the Pope.
The celebration on Friday, called a “red hat” ceremony, is scheduled at 3:30 pm (Manila time). It is taking place at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral in Roxas City, Capiz.
Before Pope Francis named him Manila archbishop, Advincula was the archbishop of Capiz.
The “red hat” ceremony is happening in a thanksgiving Mass to be presided over by Advincula, along with the apostolic nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Charles John Brown.
