Local absentee voting turnout at record high

Over 74,852 Filipinos took advantage of local absentee voting for the 2022 polls, accounting for 88.73% of the 84,358 approved LAV applications.

This surpassed the 2019 all-time record of 77%. 

Government officials and employees, cops, soldiers, and members of the media can avail themselves of local absentee voting, so they could vote ahead of election day.

Team Lubigan dominates Trece Martires elections

All 12 members of Team Lubigan, endorsed by National Unity Party (NUP), dominated the polls in Trece Martires City in Cavite. They were proclaimed winners on Tuesday, May 10, at Trece Martires City Hall.

Mayor Gemma Lubigan secured reelection with 64,742 votes, beating Melandres “Melan” de Sagun of Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS) who got 24,550 votes. 

Vice Mayor Romeo “Bobby” Montehermoso was elected to a second term with 53,789 votes against Jun “Tatang” Rollo of PDP-Laban (Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan) who got 32,293 votes.

All 10 candidates from Team Lubigan – a mix of newly-elected councilors and reelectionists – secured posts in the city council. They are the following:

Partial voter turnout for 2022 polls at 80%

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said based on its partial count, 54.6 million Filipinos participated in the 2022 elections, accounting for 80.8% of the 67.5 million registered voters.

The number could still increase as the Comelec server still does not reflect over 1,500 expected election returns in the Philippines and from overseas.

The Comelec’s highest voter turnout was in 2016, when 81.95% of Filipinos cast their ballots.

Universities, groups denounce red-tagging of election results protesters

After multisectoral groups decried possible irregularities surrounding the 2022 Philippine polls in front of the Commission on Elections office on Tuesday, May 10, online red-tagging reports against the protesters alarmed universities and various organizations. 

University and college students have been the target of online red-tagging, which has been amplified since the creation of the government task force against communists during the Duterte administration.

‘Nuisance bet’ muddles Zamboanga del Norte congressional race

Zamboanga del Norte’s board of election canvassers suspended the proclamation of the winner in the province’s 1st District congressional race because of a “nuisance candidate” who resembled and used the nickname of reelectionist Representative Romeo Jalosjos Jr.

The final count showed Jalosjos trailing his challenger Roberto Uy Jr. by a mere 484 votes, while disqualified candidate Federico Jalosjos garnered 5,424 votes.

The incumbent congressman, the son and namesake of former Zamboanga del Norte congressman Romeo Jalosjos Sr., garnered 69,107 votes while Roberto Jr., the son and namesake of the province’s outgoing governor, was ahead with 69,591 votes based on the final count on Wednesday, May 11.

Dynasties, incumbents rule polls in Cordillera

Dynasties and incumbents continued to dominate the election results in the Cordillera Administrative Region. 

For Abra and Apayao, the recently concluded polls were an all-family affair, while in Ifugao and Mountain Province, incumbents were reelected and proclaimed the day after the May 9 elections.

Davao region delivers for Sara Duterte, standard-bearer Marcos

With more than 98% of precincts reporting in results nationwide as of Friday, May 13, the Uniteam tandem of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte are set to win in the latter’s bailiwick, Davao region. 

Both Marcos and Duterte lead the count via the transparency server, in the entire region. Even in Davao del Norte, a province that played host to Marcos’ closest rival, Vice President Leni Robredo, it’s the former who has a wide lead – more than 470,000 votes compared to Robredo’s measly 39,000 votes.

Vice President Leni Robredo’s dreams for the Philippines will not end with her electoral loss in 2022. 

The lone female presidential contender is now planning to put up a museum that would house the thousands of gifts she has received from her supporters during the tough campaign period. These range from paintings to handwoven bags that symbolize the massive volunteer movement her candidacy inspired.
