US submarine makes port call in Subic

MANILA, Philippines – US fast-attack submarine USS Chicago made a port call in Subic Bay on Monday, August 3, as part of its deployment to the Western Pacific, the US embassy said in a statement.

"Chicago has been conducting a multitude of missions to showcase the latest capabilities of the submarine fleet," the embassy said.

The embassy said the USS Chicago is "one of the most advanced submarines in the world" that is home ported in Guam.

It is capable of supporting intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, and strike missions.

It measures 360 feet long and weighs 7,000 tons. It has a crew of about 170 sailors including at least one Filipino American, Logistics Specialist 1st Class Allendale Basa.

“I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with my family in Olongapo City,” said Basa. – Carmela Fonbuena/Rappler.com
