MANILA, Philippines – The Australian government is extending P88 million in relief assistance to families affected by severe flooding in Metro Manila and neighboring areas.

The assistance includes P44 million worth of emergency kits, including medical supplies, mosquito nets and water containers, and P44 million worth of rice for distribution among the families.

“The Australian government has made these items available through the Philippine Red Cross and World Food Programme so that they can be immediately accessed in serious humanitarian situations, such as the current flooding in and around the capital,” Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Bill Tweddell said in a statement on Friday, August 10.

Officials of the Australian Agency for International Development or AusAID visited flood-hit areas in the Philippines this week.

At least 10 areas in Luzon were placed under state of calamity due to severe flooding, with over two million people affected, many of whom are still housed in evacuation centers.

As of the last count of the disaster council, death toll from the floods is now at 60, while 7 remain missing.

Tweddell commended the Philippine government for its “quick response” and search and rescue operations.

He said Australia and the Philippines have had a strong partnership in humanitarian and development efforts over the past years.
