(UPDATED) The Philippines braces for a potential storm, having barely recovered from the flooding caused by a recent monsoon rain

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A potential storm entered the country Saturday, August 11, even as most of Luzon was still recovering from the disaster brought by the recent monsoon rain.

The active low pressure area (ALPA) could become a tropical depression in two to three days, said Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecaster Jun Galang in an interview with dzBB.

Once it does, Pagasa will name it Helen.

But Galang said the ALPA is unlikely to make landfall on the Philippines. “Kung walang pagbabago… hindi siya magla-landfall. Ang tungo nito north ng Taiwan papunta China,” Galang said in the radio interview. (If it doesn’t change course… it will not make landfall. It will instead proceed to north of Taiwan going to China.)

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, Pagasa estimated the ALPA at 1,020 kilometers east of Central Luzon.

The state weather bureau added the entire Philippines will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms. In another radio interview, Pagasa forecaster Fernando Cada explained there is higher probability of rain in the afternoon and evening.

Such was the case on Friday evening, August 10, when Pagasa raised the yellow warning signal in Metro Manila. Pagasa lifted all warning signals at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. – Rappler.com
