‘Helen’ moves away; Storm signals lowered

MANILA, Philippines – Public storm warning signals have been lowered as tropical storm Helen (international codename Kai-tak) accelerated further away from the country early Thursday, August 16.

Helen was last spotted 290 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City (19.1°N, 117.7°E), and carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center with gusts of up to 100 km/h.

It is moving west northwest at 24 km/h, towards the general direction of China, the state weather bureau PAGASA said in its 4 am bulletin.

The 4 am severe weather bulletin will be the last one for Helen, the bureau added.

Thursday’s weather

Despite the storm moving away from the country, it will still enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing rain and moderate to strong winds over Luzon and Western Visayas.

These areas are still warned to be alert against flashfloods and landslides, and the seaboard in these areas will still be a bit rough, not suitable for small seacraft.

Western sections of Luzon will have occasional to frequent rain, while the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will have mostly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain or thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the cities of Laoag, Baguio, Olongapo, Angeles, Tagaytay, and Puerto Princesa will be rainy.

Tuguegarao, Legazpi, Iloilo, and Bacolod cities, meanwhile, will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms.

Cebu, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and Zamboanga cities, on the other hand, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain and thunderstorms. – Rappler.com
