Death toll from ‘Helen’ climbs to 9

MANILA, Philippines – The death toll from tropical storm Helen (international name Kai-tak) has climbed to 9, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Friday, August 17.

In its 5:30 a.m. update, the NDRRMC identified the latest fatality as Razel Hidalgo, 26, from Bantay, Ilocos Sur. She died in a vehicular accident.

Seventeen people were reported injured, while two remain missing.

A total of 5,883 families or 24,492 people were affected in Regions I, III, IV-B and Cordillera Administrative Region. Some 16,100 are currently residing in 89 evacuation centers.

So far, damage to agriculture stood at P57.54 million, according to the NDRRMC.

Tropical storm Helen has left the country, but state weather bureau Pagasa said western Luzon will still feel the effects of the southwest monsoon Friday.

In its 24-hour weather forecast, Pagasa said western sections of northern and central Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Other parts of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy, it added. – Rappler.com
