Typhoon Lando weakens into severe tropical storm
Storm warning signals remain up over several provinces as severe tropical storm Lando continues to traverse the coastline of the Ilocos provinces

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Lando (Koppu) has weakened into a severe tropical storm as it continues to traverse the coastline of the Ilocos provinces on Monday, October 19.

As of 5 pm, Lando was located 45 km west southwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, packing maximum sustained winds of 105 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 135 km/h.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the storm continues to move north-northeast, at a speed of 5 km/h.

Storm signal number 2 is in effect over the following areas:

  • Ilocos Norte
  • Ilocos Sur
  • Abra
  • Apayao
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan group of islands

Signal number 1 is up over the following areas:

  • La Union
  • Pangasinan
  • Ifugao
  • Benguet
  • Batanes
  • Isabela
  • Quirino
  • Aurora
  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • Nueva Ecija
  • Zambales
  • Tarlac
  • Pampanga

PAGASA said areas within the 600-km diameter of the severe tropical storm may experience heavy to intense rainfall. Storm surge of up to 2 meters may also be experienced in affected provinces.

By Tuesday afternoon, October 20, the storm is expected to be located 15 km northwest of Claveria, Cagayan.

Better weather is expected over the entire archipelago over the weekend, PAGASA said in a press briefing.

Massive flooding

The typhoon brought much-needed water to several dams, but submerged several areas in northern and central Luzon. (READ: 64 rescued in Cabanatuan)

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) called on volunteer responders in Metro Manila and areas near Central Luzon to immediately proceed to Aurora, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Pampanga to assist in rescue operations. – Rappler.com
