MANILA, Philippines – Ten provinces in Visayas and Mindanao are under public storm warning signal number 1 as Tropical depression Ofel on Tuesday, October 23, maintains its strength as it moves closer to CARAGA and Eastern Visayas.
Ofel was last spotted 460 km east of Surigao City (09.4°N, 130.1°E), carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, and moderate to intense rainfall (5-20 mm/h) within the weather disturbance’s 400 km diameter.
Signal number 1 has been raised over the following provinces:
- Southern Leyte
- Eastern Samar
- Surigao del Norte
- Surigao del Sur
- Dinagat Island
- Agusan del Norte
- Agusan del Sur
State weather bureau PAGASA’s forecast track indicates that it will traverse Visayas and Mimaropa over the next 3 to 4 days.
It is forecast to move west at 13 km/h, state weather bureau PAGASA said. It is forecast to be 190 km east of Surigao del Sur by Wednesday morning, and 100 km north of Mactan, Cebu by Thursday. It will be near San Jose, Mindoro by Friday morning.
Areas under public storm warning signal 1 are reminded to be alert against possible landslides and flooding, while small seacraft are advised to avoid sailing out to sea, in particular in Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Due to the effects of Ofel, Eastern Visayas and Caraga will have rain and gusty winds, while the rest of Visayas, Mindanao, Bicol and Mimaropa will have cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms.
The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will experience partly cloudy skies with brief rain and thunderstorms.
The northeast monsoon or the Amihan is also affecting the country, with Luzon and Visayas experiencing moderate to strong winds.
The rest of the country will experience light to moderate winds from the northeast to north.
Seas around the archipelago are expected to range from slight to rough.
