MANILA, Philippines – Lawin (Haima) was downgraded from a super typhoon into a typhoon before dawn on Thursday, October 20, but state weather bureau PAGASA warned it remains “destructive.”

In its bulletin issued 5 am on Thursday, PAGASA said Lawin slightly weakened as it crossed Apayao. It now has maximum winds of up to 205 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of up to 285 km/h.

The typhoon is already in the vicinity of Kabugao, Apayao, moving west northwest at 25 km/h.

It had made landfall in Peñablanca, Cagayan at 11 pm on Wednesday, October 19.

Since Lawin is no longer a super typhoon, there are no more areas under signal number 5.

PAGASA also previously warned that powerful winds could cause serious damage and storm surges could affect Cagayan (including the Calayan Group of Islands), Isabela, northern Aurora, and Ilocos Norte.

Sea travel remains risky in the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon.

Lawin is expected to exit landmass via Ilocos Norte between 8 am and 10 am on Thursday morning.
