MANILA, Philippines – Visayas, Bicol, Caraga and northern Mindanao must prepare for landslides and flashfloods that may be triggered by the rains and winds of the low pressure area (LPA) in Mindanao.

The LPA was estimated to be 60 kilometers northeast of Cagayan de Oro city at 10:30 pm on Monday, January 13, state weather bureau PAGASA reported in a weather advisory.

The LPA, a type of weather system that can become a storm, brings moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms. It has already battered parts of Mindanao where 5 local government units have declared a state of calamity. At least 13 people have died while 34 are injured.

Cloudy skies will brood over the rest of Mindanao and southern Luzon bringing light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. Residents are asked to take precautions.

Small seacrafts and fishing vessels should not venture out into the sea in the northern, eastern and southern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Visayas.

Strong to gale force surface wind associated with the surge of the northeast monsoon will create big waves making sea travel dangerous. – Rappler.com
