MANILA, Philippines – Areas still recovering from the effects of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) and flooding caused by a low pressure area (LPA) will see cloudy skies and moderate to occasionally heavy rain and thunder storms on Friday, January 17.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, an LPA was spotted approximately 330 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The LPA will bring rain and thunder storms over Eastern Visayas, the Caraga region, and Northern Mindanao, which could trigger flash floods and landslides.

Yolanda and the LPA forced thousands to flee their homes, and make do with temporary shelter. Many communities affected by Yolanda still live in tent cities, which provide meager shelter against the elements.

Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, meanwhile, can be expected by those living in the rest of the Visayas, Davao region, and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The seaboards of Luzon, Visayas, and the Caraga region will see strong to gale force northeasterly surface winds because of the northeast monsoon. Small sea craft and fishing vessels are advised by PAGASA not to venture out to sea because of big waves from the weather system.

PAGASA will next issue an update in its 5 am public weather forecast and another advisory at 11am on Friday, January 17. –Rappler.com
