Tropical storm Basyang is expected to make landfall at midnight, PAGASA says

MANILA, Philippines – The state weather bureau on Friday afternoon, January 31, warned at least 32 areas to prepare for Tropical Storm Basyang (Kajiki) as it is expected to make landfall around midnight.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised Storm Warning Signal No. 2 over the following areas in the Visayas and Mindanao:

  • Iloilo

  • Negros Oriental

  • Negros Occidental

  • Siquijor

  • Guimaras

  • Cebu

  • Bohol

  • Leyte

  • Southern Leyte

  • Eastern Samar

  • Samar

  • Biliran Island

  • Camotes Island

  • Camiguin

  • Dinagat Province

  • Surigao del Norte, including Siargao Island

  • Northern part of Surigao del Sur

  • Northern part of Agusan del Norte

These areas under Signal No. 2 should prepare for winds of 61 to 100 km/h within the next 24 hours.

PAGASA placed the following under Storm Warning Signal No. 1, which means residents should prepare for winds of 30 to 60 km/h within the next 36 hours: 

  • Masbate

  • Palawan, including Calamian Group of Islands

  • Northern Samar

  • Aklan

  • Capiz

  • Antique

  • Misamis Oriental

  • Misamis Occidental

  • Rest of Agusan del Norte

  • Rest of Surigao del Sur

  • Agusan del Sur

  • Northern part of Bukidnon

  • Lanao del Norte

  • Zamboanga del Norte

PAGASA said Basyang will likely make landfall in Southern Leyte or in the northern tip of Surigao del Norte around midnight on Saturday, February 1.

The state weather bureau said that, as of 4 pm, Basyang had intensified with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 100 km/h.
