Tropical Storm Peipah nears Southern Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Peipah, which remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, is getting closer to Southern Mindanao.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the storm, which has not yet been given a local name, was 1,330 kilometers east of Southern Mindanao as of 5 pm. It had been 1,470 kilometers at around 11 am.

Its maximum sustained winds maintained a speed of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of 80 kph.

Peipah is expected to enter the Philippines Sunday afternoon or evening. It could intensify as it approaches the country. By Tuesday, April 8, its maximum sustained winds can reach 100 kph, said independent weather group Weather Philippines.

Peipah has not yet affected any part of the country.

In the meantime, PAGASA predicts scattered light rains and isolated thunderstorms in Cagayan Valley on Sunday.

The rest of the country will experience isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening brought by partly cloudy to cloudy skies.

Those heading out to sea or vacationing in coastal areas in Northern Luzon should be careful going in the water. Seas will be moderate to rough due to strong winds blowing from the northeast to east. 

Light to moderate winds will prevail in the rest of the country.
