MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Amang (international name Mekkhala) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) earlier than expected on Thursday, January 15, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
As of 4 am Thursday, Amang was located at 950 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.
PAGASA earlier told Rappler the storm was expected to enter PAR around 8 to 9 am of Thursday, January 15.
The storm comes hours before Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines. Catholic Church representatives have said the storm could prompt organizers to cancel the Pope’s visit to Leyte province.
Amang is forecast to move west northwest at 19 km/h, and is expected to be at 640 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar by Friday morning, January 16; 380 km east of Legaspi by Saturday morning, January 17, and; 340 km east of Infanta, Quezon by Sunday morning, January 18.
Heavy to intense (7.5 to 20 mm/h) rainfall is expected within the 300 km diameter of the tropical storm.
“Fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon and of Visayas,” PAGASA said Thursday.
